The Neck Test

A simple way to check if your child is dressed appropriately

What is the Neck Test?

The neck test is a simple and reliable method to determine if your child is too warm or too cold. By feeling the back of your child's neck, you can quickly assess their body temperature and adjust their clothing accordingly.

How to Perform the Neck Test

  1. Place your hand on the back of your child's neck, under their clothing
  2. Feel the temperature and moisture level
  3. Interpret the results based on what you feel

Interpreting the Results

Neck feels warm or sweaty

Your child is too warm. Remove a layer of clothing or switch to lighter fabrics.

Neck feels cool or cold

Your child is too cold. Add a layer of clothing or use warmer fabrics.

Neck feels warm and dry

Your child is dressed just right! Their body temperature is comfortable.

Important Tips

  • Check regularly, especially during outdoor activities
  • The neck is a better indicator than hands or feet, which are often cooler
  • Remember that babies can't regulate their temperature as well as older children
  • When in doubt, it's better to dress in layers that can be easily removed
